Tee off in paradise – Abu Dhabi for golfers

The imposing eyes of a falcon, wings outstretched, stare down the ninth hole of Abu Dhabi Golf Club; the celebrated home of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship held every January.

Described as “an oasis of tranquility carved out of the desert”; the Abu Dhabi Golf Club has received several ‘’best golf club in the Middle East” awards and offers 27 holes of championship golf past seven spectacular saltwater lakes.

Designed by Peter Harradine; the National Course is set over 162 hectares and presents a tough, but fair challenge to golfers; while the Garden Course par-36 nine, which incidentally is also available for night golf, is more forgiving, especially to those who are new to the game.

A short drive from here is the Yas Links; designed by Kyle Phillips with magnificent views of the Arabian Gulf. The 18-hole Championship Links Course is the Middle East’s only links rated in the world’s Top 25 by Golf Digest and its facilities and overall golf experience make it a must-play when visiting the emirate.  Where else would you be able to tee off with the world’s roundest building and world’s fastest roller-coaster on the horizon; while waving to water-sports enthusiasts on kayaks and jet skis as you wind your way down the undulating fairways?

Our third top golfing pick happens to be one designed by the great South African golfer, Gary Player. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club captures the beauty of its natural surrounds and provides a memorable end-to-end golfing experience. This eco-conscious course is set against the backdrop of the Arabian Gulf and spans over 120 hectares giving the impression of lots of space. A bit of warning though – Get your sand wedge ready! Saadiyat Beach Golf Club has 67 bunkers that sometimes appear to consume some of its holes.
