The 24,000 hectare Manyoni reserve, in Zululand, Kwazulu-Natal, is called home by all of the traditional “Big 5” with the legend “Saving our Endangered  Spaces for our Endangered Species”.

Rhino River Lodge, Zululand

Rhino River Lodge, is a young, intimate, above average 3* establishment, on the privately owned and managed Zululand Rhino Reserve.
The 24,000 hectare reserve is called home by all of the traditional “Big 5” animals, with the legend “Saving our Endangered  Spaces, for our Endangered Species”.

Game drive sightings, can include rare or endangered species; such as white tailed mongoose, Babcocks Leopard Tortoise, pennant-winged nightjar, as well as vultures.   Large mammals, such as giraffe, hippo as well as kudu, are commonly sighted.  Smaller critters, such as chameleons, porcupines as well as genet, are also on the “spotting” lists.

The Lodge can sleep up to 18 people, in two family log cabins, four double rooms. The Cottage and Homestead (each with 2 bedrooms)– beds can be made up as single or king-size.

The family log cabins, have a double bed in a loft upstairs, as well as twin beds downstairs.  Each with a large bathroom, with walk-in shower and separate bath.   The four double rooms, have an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower.

Homestead & Cottage lay out:   All rooms are thatch, with stone floors, Air Conditioners, a bar fridge, as well as tea/coffee making facilities.  For guests wanting a little out of the ordinary, The Homestead is occasionally available for hire, where guests can enjoy an exclusive home, with wrap-around windows, outdoor showers, plunge pool, as well as private deck (price on application and subject to availability).

THE COTTAGE:

Guests that desire a little extra space, as well as seclusion;  can book this traditional thatched house.   This private safari home, known as “the cottage”,  is reminiscent of a British cottage, with a nod towards African-inspired decor.   The cottage, can accommodate four guests in two en-suite bedrooms, complete with air conditioners as well as stunning views. The Cottage features a cozy lounge, dining room,  as well as a fully functional kitchen.  The covered verandah & private swimming pool, overlook the Msunduze River:  star features of this comfortable house;  the perfect spot to enjoy with family or friends, while taking in the sights and sounds of the Zululand bush.

Facilities:

Mosquito nets are standard, and an insect-repellent lotion is provided in the rooms. Malaria is not a concern, though for general comfort and to guard against tick bite fever which is a risk throughout the year we do recommend a combination of insect repellent aerosols, lotions, gel sticks or citronella-infused arm/wrist bands.
The lounge area has an all-day tea station with rusk and biscuits, DSTV and fireplace.   Meals are served in the dining room or outdoors where possible.   A shaded gazebo next to the swimming pool offers protection from the sun and pool-side towels and sun-loungers are provided.

Reception is staffed as required;  A ranger is on duty during daytime, at the bar for guests’ refreshments.
Cell phone signal is generally good, however 3G data connections can be unreliable. Wi-fi access is available from throughout the day.   The nearest filling station for diesel & petrol is across the N2 (5kms from the main gate).  Nearest pharmacies and grocery stores are in Mkuze as well as Hluhluwe (between 25 – 45 minutes drive away).

4×4 vehicles are not needed to access the Lodge.  We strongly recommend that guests follow the N2 until reaching the P450, and turn off onto the P450 to reach the reserve gate, irrespective of what Sat-Nav systems suggest, as a route choice.

Optional extras:

  • Night Drive R350 per person (2 person minimum);
  • Elephant interaction R500 per person (off-site);
  • St. Lucia Wetland Park Boat Cruise R230 per person (off-site)
