Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is a Formula One motor race that was held for the first time in 2017. It takes place on the Baku City Circuit, a street circuit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The first Formula One race at the circuit, in 2016, was named the European Grand Prix.
The circuit is a mixture of wide and open and tight and twisty. The long main straight along the Baku shoreline is a slip streaming mecca; and with cars able to run three abreast into Turn 1; the action often looks more IndyCar than F1. However from there, the track loops around into the city’s narrow, winding Icheri Sheher old town; dramatically wending past Baku’s medieval city walls. As in Monaco, slightest mistakes are punishable quickly and severely; while set-up wise; the teams are forced to choose between down-force for the twisty bits and less drag for the straight.
The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku; is the largest and also the most cosmopolitan city in the Caucasus region, and is the country’s political, scientific, cultural as well as economic centre; on the Caspian Sea. Baku is about 5,500 years old and visitors can see some wonderfully preserved relics from its past; as well as visit the fire-worshippers temple complex, Atashgah, and the natural gas-fuelled Yanardag (Fire Mountain); one of many impressive eternal fires on the Absheron Peninsula.
Throughout the country there are thousands of historical monuments, ancient cities, fortresses, palaces, mosques as well as ancient oases. Most of its territory is mountainous and also dotted with beautiful lakes.
