Amphitheatre Heritage Hike, Northern Drakensberg – KwaZulu Natal
Slackpack to the Roof of Africa – 3 Day Hike
The Amphitheatre is in the northern section of the Drakensberg (approximately 3 hrs drive from Durban & 3.5-4hrs from JHB). This hike is undoubtedly – the most accessible way to the very top of the Drakensberg escarpment (via the famous chain ladders) and the views from the top are spectacular. The Tugela Falls runs over this escarpment ( at 850m it is reputably the 2nd highest waterfall in the world).
By spending 3 days and 3 nights on the route, staying at conveniently located hotels/lodges along the way and accompanied by an experienced trail guide, it is possible for anyone who is reasonably fit and unafraid of heights, to stand on “top of the world” and experience the same sense of accomplishment as the hardened hiker. The hike has been planned so that you can walk at a comfortable pace, not encumbered by a heavy pack. At the end of the day you will have the chance to relax at your lodgings where a soak in the tub, delicious food and a comfy bed will certainly beat tinned bully beef and a thermorest!
On this trail, you’ll do 43 kilometres over 3 days of hiking with an altitude gain of 1300m, so it is not’s a hike for the faint-hearted. However, if you pace yourself with plenty of re-fuel stops enroute, the views along the way will be worth every drop of sweat!

ASK about our option B: The Buttress Partially Catered, Guide for 2 Hike Days, Cavern & Witsies Hikers Cabin Accommodation – 3 Nights
The arrival night on this trail is spent at the Cavern Berg Resort. The accommodation on the 2nd & 3rd night is at Witsies Lodge – the only lodge this high up the Drakensberg escarpment and perfectly located for this slackpacking trail – meaning you can get to the very top of the Drakensberg escarpment – without having to sleep in your own tent or cave…normally the only way for high berg hikes such as this.
The Amphitheatre is the most recognisable and dramatically imposing feature of the entire Drakensberg range, a World Heritage Site of outstanding environmental and cultural significance. A mighty wall of basalt rises over 1000 metres from the Tugela valley to the Lesotho plateau nearly 3000 metres above sea level. Part of its aesthetic appeal arises from its near perfect symmetry, extending as a sheer wall of rock some 5 kilometres in length from the Eastern Buttress to the Sentinel Peak in the west- altogether an area of majestic and incomparable beauty providing some of the finest scenery in the world.
The Amphitheatre Slackpacking trail has been planned to enable walkers of average ability to reach these heights and to be rewarded by awe inspiring, never-to-forgotten views from the top of the escarpment – a feat normally only undertaken by fit and experienced hikers who would normally have to camp overnight on the escarpment. By spending 3 days and 3 nights on the route, staying at conveniently located lodges, and having the benefit of a hiking guide to make decisions on routes and weather conditions, it is possible for anyone who is reasonably fit to stand on “top of the world” and experience the same sense of accomplishment as the dedicated hiker.
The hike has been planned so that you can walk at a comfortable pace and without the burden of a heavy backpack. At the end of the day, you’ll have the chance to relax and recover at the lodge – providing hot showers, nourishing food and a comfortable bed.
